Does Bernd use a Linux distro as their daily desktop? My current aim is to go for a minimalist setup without handicapping myself too much while avoiding bloat. Alpine seemed like a great choice and setting up xfce DE with their script is very easy & works fine out of the box. However Bernd wants to customize a lot. Alpine being musl based gives a lot of trouble when installing some packages. A lot of things break or don't work properly. So now I'm going back to Void (glibc version).

Still not sure whether to switch back or to work through some of the issues, like audio not working with i3wm otherwise it works fine. With one web browser and a few terminals opened, it uses less than 1Gb of RAM. The CPU also gets low usage. Pic related.
My home PC runs Fedora, but that's probably not minimal enough for you. I use PostmarketOS on my Pine Phone which is Alpine-based. Can't say I'm in love with it though.
>>6080 It minimizes all the things that are actually bloat to you psychologically. Everything else is a psyop.
>>6079 >Fedora Fedora is extremely solid but yeah, I'm looking for something minimal. >Can't say I'm in love with it though. Can you elaborate? >>6080 I'm looking into it right now, thanks Bernd.

Bernd uses Devuan with Xfce. Used Debian since version 2. But got upset about the systemd debate and changed to Devuan then. Also used Gnome as desktop until version 3 then changed to Xfce because didn't like how the new Gnome bloated. Never experienced big problems with Debian/Devuan. Sometimes little things didn't work exactly as expected but where fixable in one or two evenings.
What's linux like these days with vidya? I've been considering making the switch for a while but I'm not a computer guy.
>>6084 ez unless you need to play multiplayer games with basically-a-rootkit-level anticheat. And maybe alright even then by now I wouldn't know. I can't remember the last time I had even the slightest problem. But check https://www.protondb.com for what you intend to play just to be safe.

>>6084 Hardware acceleration on intel GPUs works out of the box. I can for example encode and decode MPEG2 (DVD), H264 (mp4), HEVC (mkv), VC1 (wmv), VP8 (webm), VP9 (webm) on GPU wich makes it 4-10 times faster then on CPU. Also it works with openshot, ffmpeg, firefox, chromium. So I think working or watching videos is no longer a problem. If your CPU is an intel Gen 8 or newer then it probbably has a UHD GPU wich kann encode/decode up tu 4k.
>>6084 >>6086 (but I do mostly play older single-player autismo games ymmv)
>>6082 >Can you elaborate? Part is due to the terrible hardware, but also the lack of packages. I can't remember what I was missing, since the phone mostly gathers dust these days.
I just go with linux mint every time. I'm done distro hopping. I'll try Cosmic DE when it comes out but that's it.
I'v stuck with mint for several years as a secondary, but now that I've completely gotten rid of windows I've become frustrated with some features, specially on 22. Next time I'm just going with debian or even arch. >>6084 Lots of games come out with linux versions these days, usually debian packages for ubuntu. And most games can be played just as smoothly through proton/steam, worst case scenario you can find a tutorial for running your game through lutris, playonlinux (easy) or directly through Wine (less easy). And if that's too much work, it should only take a couple hours to install a VM with a pirated copy of windows on it, though it might not have the best performance. I didn't have issues with my GPU at all and some games even run more smoothly than on windows; not having the base OS eat up half of all the PC resources just for existing is a good thing.
I tried using mint, but after a week found myself wondering what's the point of all the trampoline dancing in the terminal, if it does nothing if value for me above what the familiar windows gui has been doing for decades.
I'm using Fedora, mainly because I've been using it since around 2004. I've tried some other distros over the decades, but I've come back to it each and every time. DE is Hyprland right now, but I'm ambivalent about it. Wayland isn't as great as many of the shills say it is. I wish X11Libre makes some moves and then I'll probably go back to it, but I'll keep using Hyprland on X11Libre if possible. Before that, I was using SuSE, which was fine being a Linux newb in 1998, but there's no point in using it anymore.
>>6217 Funny, windows only became bearable for me with WSL and the fact that I could do things in the command line. Maybe it's about what tools you're used to.
>>6240 I use that Windows LTSC thing in a VM. Windows is bareable like that. It only takes a tiny bot of hard drive space, compared to the regular Windows versions.
>>6240 >Maybe it's about what tools you're used to. Of course it is. My best friend is a power user or however you want to call it and programmer, and he's enjoying Linux a lot. But for me, there's just no reason to have these complications, if I simply browse, play, watch and write. inb4 But it's free. Torrents, lol. I don't think this will change until Windows' enshittification completely breaks the average user experience
>>6238 > I wish X11Libre makes some moves It won't, the main dev has proven several times now he doesn't understand the simplest things about programming. Which is a rather bad starting point if you want to compete against Wayland and have to implement all the stuff that's missing in X11 (color management, HDR, an input protocol that can handle modern on-screen keyboards, etc.)
>>6087 > on GPU wich makes it 4-10 times faster then on CPU At 4-10 times worse quality, yes.
I'm using Debian unstable woth GNOME on all machines. It's more stable than what other Distributions (especially Ubuntu) consider to be "stable".
>>6256 But what's the problem then? You can browse, watch and write anywhere, even a phone. I have a keyboard that connects to my phone via BT. You can do mint cinnamon or xfce and install and configure all your stuff from the software manager GUI, no touching the terminal. Or go with ubuntu mate and install from the website a theme that looks like windows 98, or XP, etc all the way to 11. No touching the terminal. And it works exactly the same except your 8 yo laptop won't stutter and heat up like rice cooker just from turning on. And takes like 20GB instead of 120 Only issue is playing, but you can download steam (from their website) and then load the .exe of your game and tick the option to emulate with proton, and it works with pirated stuff too.
>>6286 At the same time, Wayland devs don't understand how technical debt works, and even to this day, they couldn't figure out how to properly have keyboard setup working as well as alternative input methods. Keep in mind, that Wayland is now older as X11 was when Wayland got started (Wayland is older than Android and still in a shitty state) As it is right now, I'm not really sure what to bet on, but if I had to make a decision, it's X11Libre. Wayland is mainly getting attention for political reasons, because of mongrels like Ariadne Conill
Gentoo, for custom kernel.
>>6428 Yes, yes. Your VPN is working. Also, hello either Rusky-Bernd or Britbernd.
